Family Therapy

Geriatrics is much more than a clinician-patient interaction:

  • Families doing elder care have stressful demands on their time.

  • Several people have to cooperate and participate with their elders for successful care and stable quality of life.

  • Trying to reason with an elder who resents being helped is more productive with professional help.

  • Elders and their children and extended families bring a lot of emotional history to situations involving cognitive and behavioral changes.

  • A family’s long-standing communication style may need to change due to the challenges of elder care.

  • Family therapy will identify unproductive communication styles, separate old family issues from the current problems (or not!) and focus everyones’ best efforts on coping with the challenges of life in old age with or without dementia.
